Navratri, one of the auspicious festivals of Hindus, is also known as Sharada Navarati or Navrata. Starting from April 13, Chaitra Navratri is the celebration of good over evil. On the occasion of Chaitra Navratri, people worship nine different forms of Goddess Durga including Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Skandmata, Chandraghanta, Mahagauri, Kushmanda, Katyayani, Siddhidatri and Kaalratri.

Chaitra Navratri History:

As per Hindu mythology, Chaitra Navratri signifies the creation of the universe. It is believed that during ancient times a demon named Mahishasura tortured all the three-sphere, Trilok, including earth, heaven and hell, and nobody could defeat him. To fight back and end his terror, Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva combined their power and strength to create Goddess Durga. When Mahishasura turned into a buffalo, Maa Durga, bestowed all her power and slayed him with her Trishul, putting an end to all his terror and also restored peace and harmony back to the universe.

Significance and celebration:

Chaitra Navratri, the birth of the universe also signifies the beginning of the New Year for the Hindus. During the course of these nine days, the nine different Avatars of Goddess Durga are honoured. People all across the country show great enthusiasm on the occasion of Chaitra Navratri by observing fast, performing pujas, preparing various kinds of traditional sweets. People of Gujarat plays Dandiya and fast. People dress up in new clothes and many woman chant the mantras in the evening. The auspicious festival holds a very important place in the heart of the people. This year Navratri will start from April 13 and will conclude on April 22.
