Commonwealth Games 2022: Neeraj Chopra sends stirring message to Indian contingent

Neeraj Chopra might be giving the Commonwealth Games a skip but it hasn’t stopped him from spreading the good omens among the Indian contingent at Birmingham. The Olympic gold medalist recently won silver at the World Athletics Championships in the javelin throw event at Eugene, Oregon but did injure his thigh, ruling him out of the Birmingham Games. Regardless, the hot-shot track and field star extends his wishes to the Indian camp while congratulating the medal winners.

Taking to Twitter, Chopra expressed his delight at the impressive showing by Indian participants in the Games:

“Hi everyone. I’ve been away working on getting back to fitness, but it has been amazing to see our Team India athletes do so well in Birmingham! Congratulations to all our medal winners so far, and to all the athletes who are representing at @birminghamcg22.” 

Continuing the thread, he ran through the congratulations for the weightlifting contingent, the gold-winning table tennis team, the badminton mixed-team players, the unheralded lawn bowls champions, the medal-winning judokas and Saurav Ghosal’s long-awaited bronze medal. Throwing light on good friend Tejaswin Shankar’s hard-fought bronze, the emotions were apparent in Neeraj’s tweet:  

“And I couldn’t be happier to see my friend and brother @TejaswinShankar win India a first Track & Field medal in the High Jump. Congratulations Bhai, we have come a long way from 4 years back and I hope hope we can celebrate together soon!”

Having shared the Commonwealth stage with high-jumper Shankar four years ago at Gold Coast, the two have become close friends. Given the 23-year-old’s ordeals before the Games, the bronze medal was a moment of validation for the Delhi lad.

Meanwhile, Chopra signed off his series of tweets wishing for more medals: 

“We’ve still got some days to go, and I’m sure all our athletes are going to give it their best to bring many more medals home. Here’s wishing them all the very best for their events!”
