COVID curfew in Uttar Pradesh extended till May 17: Official

  • The COVID curfew in UP was set to be lifted on May 10
  • It has now been extended by a week
  • The state recorded 26,847 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday

The partial COVID curfew in Uttar Pradesh, which was to be lifted on Monday morning, has been extended till May 17, ANI UP reported, quoting additional chief secretary (ACS) Navneet Sehgal.

To rein in the coronavirus outbreak, the UP government had initially announced weekend curfew. It announced on April 29 that the curfew would cover Mondays too and on May 3, it was extended till May 6, before being extended till May 10.

During this period, the essential services continued to function and vaccination drive continued.

India is battling a ferocious second wave of coronavirus with more than 400,000 cases being reported for the past several days. In terms of deaths, the country recorded more than 4,000 deaths on Friday and Saturday.

Uttar Pradesh on Saturday recorded 26,847 new COVID-19 cases and 298 deaths.
