A Delhi court on Thursday has granted bail to former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student leader Umar Khalid, who was jailed in September in connection with the Delhi riots in February 2020. He was booked under the stringent anti-terror law — Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The court said that Khalid, can’t be made to incarcerate in jail for infinity merely on account that others, who were part of the mob, are still to be arrested. The judge, however, gave one advice to the former student leader before letting him go – install the Aarogya Setu app.

Judge Vinod Yadav asked Umar Khalid to download the app, which has been mandated among other bail conditions by the government in wake of the rising COVID-19 cases.

The former student leader has been accused of rioting, which took place at or around the house of main accused Tahir Hussain, a former Aam Aadmi Party leader.

Communal violence had broken out in northeast Delhi on February 24 last year after clashes between citizenship law supporters and protesters spiralled out of control leaving at least 53 people dead and around 200 injured.
