Global terrorism biggest problem confronting world now: PM Modi at BRICS Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the 12th BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) summit on Tuesday and stated that “Global terrorism is the biggest problem confronting the world at the moment”. Speaking amidst global leaders like Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Brazilian President Jair Bolsanaro and others, PM Modi added that countries providing implicit or tacit support to terrorist organisations should also be held accountable.

The 70 year-old added that the problem of terrorism should be dealt with in a coordinated manner and went on to delineate how through the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” scheme India had brought about seismic “reform process.”

PM Modi added that the bedrock principles of the Atmanirbhar scheme was creating a ‘self-reliant’ and ‘resilient’ India, and added the scheme will help the country play a bigger role in global value chains in a post-pandemic world. He added the self reliant India scheme would allow the country become a force multiplier in the global economy of a post-COVID world.

The Prime Minister also stated that India’s ability to be self-reliant was tested during the COVID-19 pandemic and added that his government managed to provide support to over 150 countries with the help of Indian pharmaceutical companies who provided key medicine not just to meet the demands of the nation but also of countries who needed help.

The Prime Minister added that in 2021 BRICS would complete 15 years and stated that ‘sherpas’ can curate a report to evaluate the various decisions taken by the group in the past years.

Modi further said that during India’s chairmanship in 2021 it would try to strengthen the intra-BRICS cooperation.
