Hathras case: Allahabad HC will monitor CBI probe, says SC

  • As far as transferring the case is concerned, it is appropriate for CBI to conclude probe: SC

The Supreme Court on Tuesday, while hearing a plea seeking transfer of Hathras case outside Uttar Pradesh, said that the Allahabad High Court will monitor the CBI probe and the agency will file status reports there, reported PTI.

A three-judge bench headed by CJI SA Bobde said as far as transferring the case to Delhi is concerned, it is appropriate for CBI to conclude probe and it will be decided later. The Supreme Court will Allahabad HC will also ensure security of the victim’s family and witnesses.

The SC has directed CRPF to provide security to the family and witnesse within a week from Tuesday. 

The Supreme Court bench said “it would be appropriate for the high court to proceed to monitor the investigation in the manner in which it would desire” as the incident took place in its jurisdiction. 

On September 14, a 19-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly raped by four upper-caste men in Hathras and she died on September 29 at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital during treatment. The victim was cremated in the dead of the night near her home on September 30, allegedly without the presence of her family members. 

The state government set up a Special Investigation Team, which has completed its probe. It was supposed to submit its report to the government, which had extended the deadline.
