Highways and connectivity promised to poll-bound states in Budget 2021
- Generous budget-allocation has been witnessed for construction of highways in poll-bound states
- West Bengal has been allocated Rs 25,000 crore for highways and intercity connectivity
- The FM also emphasised the development of the Mumbai-Kanyakumari corridor
Nirmala Sitharaman, while presenting the budget for the fiscal Year 2021-22, announced reformation for improving the transportation and infrastructure of the country. Especially in the states expecting elections this year, prosperous amounts have been allocated, aiming to improve the inter-city or inter-state connectivity.
Rs 25,000 crore has been allocated for highways in West Bengal, a state that is expecting a nail-biting state assembly election around May. The Finance Minister has proposed building 675 km highways in the state. Out of that, expenditure will also be made for upgrading the road connecting Kolkata with Siliguri.
In Tamil Nadu, Sitharaman announced the government’s plans to invest Rs 1.03 lakh crore for working on the highways extending 3,500 km within the state. She also announced an investment of Ra 65,00 crore for the highways in Kerala, emphasising the development of the Mumbai-Kanyakumari corridor.
Tamil Nadu and Kerala will also go to polls this year in May.
Another state that will witness an election this year, Assam, has also been promised the construction of roads stretching 1,300 km within the state.

Besides the poll-bound states, the Financial Minister has announced a budget of Rs 8,500 for completing 11,000 km of National Highway corridors.
