In a first, a Twitter account has been created for the Second Gentleman of the United States as Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’ husband Douglas Emhoff is close to making history by becoming the one.

Notably, Harris made history by becoming the first female, first Indian American and first Black vice president-elect of the nation.

“Future Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff. Devoted dad. Proud husband to Vice President-elect Harris,” reads the bio of @Secondgentleman Twitter handle.

President-elect Joe Biden, who is scheduled to be sworn-in on January 20 along with Harris, tweeted that his administration will gain control of the official White House Twitter accounts as soon as he comes to power.

“Folks — This will be the account for my official duties as President. At 12:01 PM on January 20th, it will become @POTUS. Until then, I’ll be using @JoeBiden. And while you’re here, follow @FLOTUSBiden@SenKamalaHarris@SecondGentleman and @Transition46,” he said in a tweet.

Interestingly, this is also the first time US President-elect has been given a new official presidential Twitter account with zero followers.

Meanwhile, Emhoff, who will take control of @SecondGentleman in a few days, shared his joy on the platform.

“I’m so incredibly honored and humbled to be the first @SecondGentleman of the United States. As we countdown to Inauguration Day, I’ve been doing my homework—and looking to the past for inspiration,” he tweeted with a video.

In a recent blog post, Twitter has said that as people can watch the Inauguration Day ceremony on the microblogging site, the transitions for all accounts will happen in “real-time” on January 20.

“These institutional accounts will not automatically retain the followers from the prior administration,” the tech giant wrote in the post but did not explain why the decision was made.
