In Biden’s I-Day wish to India, Gandhi’s ‘non-violence’ takes spotlight

US President Joe Biden on Sunday extended his wishes to the people of India, who celebrate the 75th anniversary of their Independence on August 15, 2022. Biden said that the US honours India’s “democratic journey”, which has been guided by “Mahatma Gandhi’s enduring message of truth and non-violence.”

Biden also mentioned that the United States and India are also celebrating the 75th of anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations, calling the countries “indispensable partners.”

“Our partnership is further strengthened by the deep bonds between our people”, Biden’s statement on Sunday read. About four million (40 lakh) Indian-Americans currently reside in the United States.

“The vibrant Indian-American community in the United States has made us a more innovative, inclusive, and stronger nation”, he added.

“I am confident that in the years ahead our two democracies will continue to stand together to defend the rules-based order; foster greater peace, prosperity and security for our people; advance a free and open Indo-Pacific; and together address the challenges we face around the world”, Biden’s statement read.

Biden has not visited India after he took office in early 2021. However, he came to New Delhi when he served as the Vice President of Barack Obama’s administration. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Biden have previously met, once at the White House. The most recent meeting was at the G7 summit in Germany.

Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, also released a statement on Sunday to wish India on its 75th anniversary of independence.

“This year is especially meaningful for our two nations as we celebrate a milestone: 75 years of diplomatic relations. Our strategic partnership touches everything from climate to trade to our vibrant people-to-people ties”, he said.

I am confident that, as two great democracies, our partnership will continue to contribute to the security and prosperity of our people and the global good. Happy Independence Day, India!” Blinken added..
