Indian man who was found alive in mortuary dies 5 days later

A 45-year-old man who was found alive after being declared dead and kept in a morgue freezer for seven hours died during treatment at Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College in Meerut. Srikesh Kumar was hit by a motorbike in Moradabad on November 18 and rushed to hospital where his condition deteriorated rapidly. Doctors declared him dead and moved him to the morgue the following day in order to conduct a post mortem.

Called to identify the body,  Srikesh’s sister-in-law noticed movement in the corpse. 

“The emergency medical officer had seen the patient at around 3 a.m. and there was no heartbeat. He told me he had examined the man multiple times,” the hospital’s medical superintendent told Agence France Presse on Sunday.

Srikesh was transferred from the hospital that had declared him dead to another medical facility but he was still in a coma. An investigation was launched to understand how this happened.

Man presumed dead wakes up after being kept in morgue freezer for 7 hours

Dr Shiv Singh, CMS of the Moradabad District Hospital, told ANI, “He died yesterday evening. The health department is probing the matter.”

Srikesh’s family members have accused the doctors of being careless and they told India TV that the man was taken to at least three hospitals before finally being declared dead by the doctor working on emergency duty.

The dead man’s brother told the Times of India: “My brother fought for his life but lost the battle after five days. He wanted to live.”

“He showed signs of recovery. He used to respond whenever we called his name. His vitals were normal. However, he had a clot in his brain,” Srikesh’s brother said.
