For the fourth time in a row, Indore in Madhya Pradesh has been adjudged India’s cleanest city in Swachh Survekshan 2020, the fifth edition of the annual cleanliness survey of the country. Gujarat’s Surat is on the second spot and Maharashtra’s Navi Mumbai on third.

“Congratulations to the people of Indore for achieving the first position in being India’s cleanest city in Swachh Survekshan 2020. The city has hit a four this time & surely will hit a six in the coming future,” said Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Swachh Sarvekshan is an extensive sanitation survey across major Indian cities to check the progress and impact of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched in 2014. It aims to foster a spirit of competition among the cities and offers a comprehensive assessment of their sanitation status.

The performance of each city is evaluated on five key parameters:  Municipal solid waste – sweeping, collection and transportation; municipal solid waste – processing and disposal of solid waste; open defecation; capacity building and eLearning; provision of public and community toilet seats; information, education and communication.

In 2019, the second and third spot was bagged by Ambikapur in Chhattisgarh and Mysore in Karnataka.
