Justice NV Ramana appointed Chief Justice of India, to take over on April 24

President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday appointed Justice NV Ramana as the next Chief Justice of India. He will take charge from April 24, 2021. The current Chief Justice of India, Sharad Arvind Bobde, is due to retire on April 23 this year. 

NV Ramana was recommended by the current CJI Bobde last month. He is one of the most senior judges of the Supreme Court and has held several posts, including acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court and Chief Justice of Delhi High Court.

Justice Ramana was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court on February 17, 2014 after serving as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court for a few months. He will serve as the Chief Justice of India for a year and four month-long tenure ending on August 26, 2022. 

The 63-year-old justice has been a part of landmark judgements, including Anuradha Bhasin v. Union of India, Md. Anwar v. State of NCT of Delhi and Jindal Stainless Ltd v. State of Haryana.
