Subhas Chandra Bose (23 January 1897 – 18 August 1945) was an Indian nationalist whose defiance of British rule in India made him a hero among Indians, but whose alliances with Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan during the Second World War left a legacy troubled by authoritarianism, anti-Semitism, and military failure.
Early in 1942, German and Indian officials in the Special Bureau for India in Berlin and Indian soldiers of the Indische Legion addressed Bose as “Netaji,” an appellation that means “Respected Leader.” It is presently utilized all throughout India.
During the British Raj, in Orissa, Subhas Bose was born into a wealthy Bengali family of wealth and power. He had early exposure to an Anglocentric education and was sent to England to take the Indian Civil Service exam after graduating from college. He passed the crucial first exam with honors but declined to take the formal final exam because he believed nationalism to be a higher calling. Bose joined the Indian National Congress and Mahatma Gandhi’s nationalist campaign after returning to India in 1921.
In 1938, Bose was elected president of Congress. After his reelection in 1939, disagreements developed between him and the Congress leadership, including Gandhi, over the future federation of British India and the princely states. The Congress leadership was also uneasy about Bose’s negotiable approach to nonviolence and his ambitions for more power. Bose resigned as party leader after the vast majority of the Congress Working Committee members left in displeasure, and he was ultimately expelled from the organization.
His life consisted of other twists and turns and took its own course, setting an inspiration for generations to come.
According to scholarly consensus, Subhas Chandra Bose died on August 18, 1945, from third-degree burns sustained when his overloaded Japanese plane crashed in Japanese-controlled Formosa (now Taiwan).
Subhash Chandra Bose is still widely remembered and his charisma is celebrated throughout the world.
