Lifeline Indeed! Hyderabad Metro transports heart for transplant

In a first of its kind initiative by metro rail services
in India, Hyderabad metro on Tuesday used its exclusive passenger train to
transport a heart for a transplant from one
part of the city to another, the official handle of Hyderabad metro tweeted.

The organ was transported from LB Nagar to Apollo Hospitals in Jubilee Hills and a special corridor was also created for the purpose, according to Hyderabad Metro Rail.

According to a Newsminute report, the heart was harvested from a 45-year-old man who was declared to be brain
dead.

The commute from LB Nagar to Jubilee Hills takes more than an hour as the distance between the two points is nearly 20 km but thanks to the Hyderabad metro’s helping hand, the medical staff managed to transport the heart in less than 30 minutes.

A special
train was arranged at Nagole station which helped pick the heart at around 3:30
pm on Tuesday and was rushed to Apollo hospital located in Jubilee hills,
crossing at least 16 metro stations, Newsminute reported.

In an official statement released by Apollo Hospital, the facility said that the organ was carried and safely transported by one of their doctors, Dr. AGK Gokhale.

“This
was a God-send opportunity for us to mobilize our resources towards saving a
precious life. I must thank Kamineni and Apollo Hospitals for reaching out to
us with this benevolent request. We have taken all safety measures in place
along with creating a green corridor to mobilize a special non-stop train from
Nagole to Jubilee hills, seamlessly facilitating the transportation of the
heart in a quest to save a life,” said KVB Reddy, the Managing Director and
CEO, of L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited.

However, this is not the first time that the Hyderabad administration came for rescue in  such critical moments. In another similar incident reported from Hyderabad, city’s traffic police prepared a green corridor between Lakidikapool to Secunderabad to help a patient in medical emergency.
