MS Dhoni achieves huge T20 feat, shy of Rohit Sharma’s record

  • MS Dhoni has played 350 T20 matches

MS Dhoni on Sunday became the second Indian, after Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma, to play 350 T20 matches. The former Chennai Super Kings and India captain has played 98 T20 Internationals while and 222 IPL games since first playing a 20-over game in 2006. 

The Chennai Super Kings were beaten by the Punjab Kings at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai on Sunday.

Dhoni with 350 T20 matches under his belt trails current India captain Rohit Sharma (372). Former CSK player Suresh Raina (336) is the other Indian in the list. MSD, now 40 years old, has played for the Chennai Super Kings and Rising Pune Supergiants in the IPL. Rohit Sharma represented the Deccan Chargers before changing base to Mumbai, where he won five IPL titles.

MS Dhoni has been in some form in the 2022 season. The wicketkeeper batsman scored an unbeaten half-century in 38 balls against Shreyas Iyer’s Kolkata Knight Riders in the tournament opener. However, the four-time league champions lost by six wickets. 

Against Lucknow Super Giants, in CSK’s second game, Dhoni fired 16 runs in six balls to help his side register a mammoth 210 in the first innings. However, half-centuries from Quinton de Kock and Evin Lewis saw the KL Rahul-led side win the thriller by sic wickets.

CSK came into the game gaianst the Punjab Kings looking to score their first points. But they were reduced to 98-7 in 15 overs. For Punjab, debutant Vaibhav Arora and Liam Livingstone took two wickets each as Kagiso Rabada, Arshdeep Singh and Odean Smith dismissed one batsman respectively. 

With 83 runs needed in 30 balls, Dhoni was unbeaten at 11 off 21 deliveries. He was yet to hit a boundary in the game. He finished the game with 23 runs. 

In the first innings,  Liam Livingstone justified his Rs 11.50 crore price-tag with a smashing 32-ball 60 but Punjab Kings were restricted to 180 for 8.
