Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti is being released from her detention, Jammu and Kashmir administration spokesperson Rohit Kansal tweeted on Tuesday.

Mufti was among the several leaders who had been taken into preventive custody hours before the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was revoked on August 5, 2019.

She was first detained under Sections 107 and 151 of CrPC but later booked under the controversial Public Safety Act. The Union Territory administration later extended her detention by three months in July.

Mehbooba became the first woman chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir in 2016 as head of the PDP-BJP alliance.

“As Ms Mufti’s illegal detention finally comes to an end, Id like to thank everybody who supported me in these tough times. I owe a debt of gratitude to you all. This is Iltija signing off,” Mufti’s daughter said in a tweet on this day.
