Rains batter Mumbai, city witnesses second highest August day rainfall in a decade

Several parts of Mumbai and its neighbouring regions have
been put on red alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), till
Wednesday, as the region experienced the second highest August day rain in a
decade after the first one in 2017 on Tuesday.  

Many areas of the city remain waterlogged due to overnight downpour
on Tuesday. Services of the city’s lifeline, local trains, remain shut, except a
few services. In a search operation for two of the four people who fell into
the drain after the walls of their houses collapsed in Santacruz, body of one female
was recovered while one remains missing. The NDRF has called-off the search
operation predicting the missing girl could have been carried away by strong
water current in the open nullah.

Iqbal Singh Chahal, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)
Commissioner on Tuesday told ANI that the city is facing a flood like situation
as the Mithi river has swelled up crossing danger mark. Owing to the situation,
the government has asked all offices and establishments to remain closed. The
BMC has also asked all residents to remain indoors.

The IMD has forecasted ‘extremely heavy’ rainfall in Mumbai
for Wednesday, while up to Thursday for Thane, Palghar and Nashik.
