Roger Federer will retire from competitive tennis after a weekend of intense top-class tennis action at the Laver Cup 2022.

Team Europe has defended a perfect record in their previous four meetings with Team World, the first three of which presented Federer ranked no lower than third in the world rankings.

The event switches each year, and this year Federer and the European team that includes Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are headed to London’s O2 Arena, which will feel familiar to one of their teammates, two-time Wimbledon winner Andy Murray.

Federer’s final competitive match will be in the doubles on Friday evening, alongside Rafael Nadal, one of the only players who can rival his place in tennis history, having won 22 Grand Slam titles.

In the final match of the evening session, the Fedal (an unofficial name often used to describe Federer and Nadal, both on and off the court) pair will face Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock of the United States.

All players are required to play at least one singles match on either Friday or Saturday, so after completing the Friday doubles, the 41-year-old will only be able to cheer on his teammates from the sidelines. Matteo Berrettini, Team Europe’s alternate player, will take his place.
