The 15th match of the Indian Premier League 2020 sparked a debate when the umpire’s soft signal sided with Yuzvendra Chahal as the leg-spinner claimed an unclean catch to dismiss Sanju Samson.

Chahal finished the innings at the top of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s bowling chart with 3/24.

Virat Kohli introduced his best bowler in the fifth over when Rajasthan Royals had already lost their openers. Chahal, who has been on song since the tournament opener, didn’t disappoint the skipper and dismissed Samson off the very first ball.

The slow and loopy delivery by the leggie was gently hit back, not coming off the middle. The ball stayed few inches off the pitch as Chahal took a low catch to dismiss Samson.

Samson didn’t leave the pitch immediately. The catch was unclean and the on-field umpire had to seek Paschim Pathak’s assistance for the decision, the soft decision standing ‘out’.

However, Pathak needed a few replays, different angles as the visuals couldn’t determine if the ball touched the ground or Chahal caught it with the tip of his fingers. The third umpire after reviewing the footage multiple times before admitting to a lack of evidence. The decision stayed out.

Twitterati responded to this decision in no time, criticising the umpiring standards of IPL.

Rajasthan Royals could manage only 154 runs in their 20 overs, losing to Royal Challengers Bangalore by eight wickets.
