‘Second COVID wave’ in Maharashtra; Nagpur, Pune and Mumbai worst-hit

Maharashtra recorded 25,833 of the 39,726 new COVID-19 cases that India recorded on Thursday. This is the highest single-day spike in the state since March 2020, when the first COVID-19 infection was detected. The earlier record was 24,886 cases, reported on September 11 last year.
Earlier this week, a central team report had said that Maharashtra is in the beginning of a second COVID-19 wave.
The state’s coronavirus infection tally has gone up to 23.9 lakhs. Maharashtra recorded 58 deaths on Thursday, taking the death toll to 53,138. Currently, there are 1,66,353 active cases in the state.

Within the state, Nagpur city recorded the highest number of new cases on the second consecutive day. Nagpur reported 2,926 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday. It was followed by Mumbai (2,877) and Pune (2,791).

Mumbai’s COVID-19 tally increased to 3,52,851 and eight deaths took the fatality count to 11,559.
Mumbai division reported 5,190 new cases and 14 deaths.
