Shimron Hetmyer,
the West Indies cricketer who missed his spot in the team because he missed his
flight to Australia, may be sad that his country got knocked out of the T20
World Cup, but cricket enthusiasts are having fun sharing memes of how the
cricketer might be responding to West Indies’ loss to Ireland. At the group
stage match on Friday, Ireland defeated West Indies by 9 wickets.
Batting first,
West Indies put a competitive 146 runs on board. But the Irish batters were set
to destroy the Caribbean bowling attack. Paul Stirling, 66 not out in 48 balls,
and Lorcan Tucker, 45 not out in 35 balls, took the Irish team home with two
overs remaining.

After West
Indies were knocked out of the T20 World Cup, a flurry of memes spread on
social media which seemed to suggest that Hetmyer must be smiling a wry smile
over the ouster for the way in which West Indies Cricket treated him.

Gaurav, a cricket enthusiast had a Bollywood reference to offer. His meme,
embedded below, shows Shimron waiting with a welcome thali at the doorway to
receive his West Indian teammates, a’ la Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham – a Hindi film
starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Jaya Bachchan. In
the film, Jaya Bachchan waits for Shah Rukh Khan in the same manner. The scene has
a cult following among Bollywood fans and often features in memes.
Another cricket fan shared a Hindi meme which shows Shimron
Heteymeyer’s head pasted on another person’s head in which the character says:
Did you see the result of not taking me along?
Yet another
cricket enthusiast tweeted, “Moral of the Story: If Hetmeyer misses his flight,
buy him a private jet and fly him all the way; don’t drop him.”
Shimron
Hetmyer missed his spot in the World Cup squad after missing his flight. Hetmyer’s
original flight was postponed at his request due to family reasons, which meant
he would miss the first two warm-up games against Australia. “It was made clear
to him that if there were any further delays…we’d have no choice but to replace
him in the squad, as we are not prepared to compromise the team’s ability to
prepare for this…global event,” West Indies team director Jimmy Adams had said
at the time.
