Resignations jolted West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress after several prominent faces quit the party ahead of the 2021 assembly elections in the state. While some of them have already joined the BJP, others have hinted at joining the party.

Here’s the list of leaders who have tendered resignation recently –

1. Suvendu Adhikari – The senior leader delivered a jolt to Mamata Banerjee by quitting TMC and joining BJP in December 2020.

“I am writing to tender my resignation as a member of All India Trinamool Congress as well as other positions held by me in the party and its associate organs with immediate effect”, he wrote in a letter to Banerjee.

After joining BJP, he wrote a letter to TMC leaders saying, “The party was not built in one day with the contribution of one person. It is therefore especially painful, that the individuals currently in charge of the party are treating it like their personal fiefdom. The very people on the backs of whom the party was created are now being sidelined, humiliated and outcast.”

2. Soumendu Adhikari– Days after Suvendu quit TMC, his younger brother too tendered his resignation and joined BJP. Soumendu was a TMC councillor and chairperson of the Kanthi municipality in East Midnapore district.

3. Silbhadra Datta – The MLA from Barrackpore Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganaa tendered his resignation from the party.

“I am tendering my resignation as a member of All India Trinamool Congress as well as from all others positions held by me in the party and its associate organisation with immediate effect,” Datta’s wrote in the letter

4. Rajib Banerjee – The senior leader resigned from the post of MLA on Friday.

“I do hereby tender my resignation as a Member of All India  as well as from all other positions held by me in the party and its associates with immediate effect. I am thankful for all the challenges and opportunities that have been afforded to me and I will always value my time spent as a member of the party,” he wrote in the resignation letter.

The leader, however, hinted at joining the BJP.

“After I resigned from the TMC, I received a call from the BJP leadership…..Amit Shah ji told me to come over to Delhi. If I get assurances regarding the state’s development, I will join the party,” Banerjee told a Bengali news channel.

Meanwhile, TMC MLA from Uttarpara, Prabir Ghoshal, resigned from two party posts, but said he will continue to be MLA “keeping in mind the needs of people.”

MLA Jitendra Tiwari also resigned from the post of chairman of the administrative board of the Asansol Municipal Corporation last month but said he would not resign from the MLA post.

Leader Kabirul Islam resigned from the post of General Secretary of the party’s minority cell.
