Teammate says Christian Eriksen was hugged when he visited them at training

Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel described Christian Eriksen’s
collapse midgame against Finland as a ‘traumatic experience.’ Less than a week earlier, many of them had formed a wall around the stricken midfielder as he received CPR on the pitch at Copenhagen’s Parken Stadium.

Eriksen’s collapse
during the first half of Denmark’s opening Euro 2020 match against Finland,
later revealed to have been caused by a cardiac arrest. Schmeichel was
assisting Eriksen’s partner at the side of the pitch and described his feelings
when he returned to the Danish camp for the first time.

“I think a couple
of the guys maybe hugged him quite hard,” Schmeichel was quoted by BBC as saying. “But it was just really nice to see him, you know, healthy and in
good spirits.

Schmeichel recalled Eriksen showing up at training while
they were there and described it as a fantastic moment. He counted himself
fortunate to be able to pay Eriksen a visit to the hospital. He stated that
many of the boys were seeing him for the first time, so training was
immediately halted, and everyone went over to him.

Schmeichel believes Eriksen’s visit, which came the day
after Denmark’s loss to Belgium, was the real motivation the team required.
