Tokyo Olympics: With 32 golds, China leads the medal race, US on number 2
- China leads the medal tally with 69 medals, including 32 golds
- The United States has won 73 medals in total, including 24 golds
- Hosts Japan are placed third in the tally
As day 12 of the Tokyo Olympics ended on
Tuesday, China further solidified its position at the top of the medal tally.
China has won a total of 32 gold medals
in the Summer Games so far, while also winning 21 silver medals and 16 bronze
medals.
In total, China leads the medal tally with 69
medals. Although the United States has more medals in total with 73, the once
Olympic Games leader has won just 24 gold medals in this edition in Tokyo. The US
has also won 28 silver medals and 21 bronze medals so far this year.
Hosts Japan, who were sitting in second
place in the tally a few days ago, now complete the top three. The hosts have
won 19 gold medals so far in the games. They have also won 6 silver medals and
11 bronze medals, boasting of a total scalp of 36 medals.
Day 12 had a disappointing start for India at
the Tokyo Olympics as the men’s hockey team lost against world champions
Belgium in the last four stage by 2-5. This put a halt to India’s dream of
reaching the Olympic finals after 41 years. However, the side is still on for a
bronze medal in the games. India will be competing for bronze against the
losing team from the second semi-final between Australia and Germany on
Thursday.
Annu Rani failed to qualify for the finals in
the Women’s Long Throws Qualification — Group A. Ran registered a throw of
50.35m in her first attempt. Soon after, she was placed at the ninth spot. Unfortunately, she slipped
to the 14th spot after her second attempt that registered at 53.19m. Annu
Rani’s final attempt registered a throw of 54.04m as the Qualification Group A
ended. Poland’s Maria Andrejczyk qualified for the final in the game.
India’s Sonam Malik was beaten by Mongolia’s Bolortuya
in Women’s 62kg freestyle wrestling. She pushed Bolortuya out of the ring in
the first period to take the lead by 1-0. Bolortuya crushed Sonam in a takedown
during the last 30 seconds as she attacked Sonam’s right leg.
