India is currently gripped with a massive wave of coronavirus cases, reporting over 200,000 cases daily for the past few days. The country on Monday reported over 2.73 lakh cases in its biggest single-day spike.

The announcement comes hours after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson cancelled his scheduled trip to New Delhi on April 25 over the rise in coronavirus cases in the country.

Agreement on a ‘Roadmap 2030’ for re-energised relations between the two countries across trade and investment and climate action was among the agendas for his visit.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock confirmed the ban on all arrivals from India, with the exception of British and Irish nationals, who will be required to undergo a 10-day quarantine upon their arrival at a governement-approved hotel.
