Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) president and veteran actor Kamal Haasan is fighting the Tamil Nadu assembly elections 2021 from the Coimbatore South assembly constituency.

Haasan registered his party in February, 2018, and made his political debut in the 2019 Lok Sabha campaign. He formed ties with four other minor parties, and has named the group Makkalin Mudhal Kootani.

The alliance contested from a total of 227 constituencies.

Haasan, significantly, contested from the Coimbatore South seat, which the two major regional powers: the DMK and AIADMK, have given away in the 2021 elections to their allies, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress.

Reportedly, Haasan had considered four other seats: Alandur, T Nagar, Velachery and Mylapore for his contestation.

The party won a 3.72% vote share during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, barely 18 months after the party%u2019s establishments, securing more than one lakh votes in three of the four seats situated in Chennai.
