It has a population of hundred thousand and covers a total area of 5.1 square kilometers. It is nestled in the heart of the Thar Desert. In 1156 AD, Maharawal Jaisal Singh, a Rajput king, founded the city.
Jaisalmer stands on a ridge of yellowish sandstone and most of the buildings, houses and edifices are build of the yellow sandstone. This is the reason it is called the Golden City. The Jaisalmer Fort also known as Sonar Qila overshadows the city. The fort has hotels, shops, old houses and a royal palace. The fort is surrounded by ninety-nine bastions. Bada Bagh, Patwaon-Ki-Haveli, Jain Temples, Jaisalmer War Museum, Kuldhara Abandoned Village, The Thar Heritage Museum, Maharaja’s Palace, Mandir Palace, and Tanot Mata Temple are must visit places in Jaisalmer.
