KBC Offline Quiz (August 30, 2021): Who among the following was the first one to win the World Championship in Badminton?
a. Saina Nehwal
b. PV Sindhu
c. Jwala Gutta
d. Prakash Padukone
Answer: PV Sindhu
Ace Indian badminton player PV Sindhu, who is also a two-time Olympian from India, became the first Indian female to win gold at the World Championship in Badminton on August 25, 2019. She beat the familiar rival Nozomi Okuhara of Japan.
Not only did she become the first Indian woman to win the championship since its inception in 1977, but it took her score to that of Olympic gold medallist Zhang Ning’s record of five medals at the event.
It was Sindhu’s fifth World Championships medal — joint-most for a woman singles player with former Olympics and world champion Zhang Ning of China — to go with the two successive silvers and a couple of bronze medals.
Sindhu‘s World Badminton Championship campaign started with a match with another legendary player Taiwan’s Yu-Po Pai. Sindhu came through in straight sets without having to break into a sweat as she won 21-14, 21-15.
