The ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup is scheduled to be played from October 16, 2022, to November 13, 2022. Australia is the host nation this year for the international championship. 

Kane Williamson will once again be the captain for New Zealand in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022, beginning from their first match against Australia on October 22.

Who is Kane Williamson?

Kane Williamson is an international cricketer from New Zealand. He was born on August 8, 1990 in New Zealand. He was raised in a family where all the members were associated with sports. His mother was a basketball representative, his father had played Under-17 cricket for Northern Districts in New Zealand and his sisters played volleyball.

Williamson began playing senior representative cricket at the age of 14 and he was coached by Pacey Depina while he was studying in Tauranga Boys’ College from 2004–2008.

This right handed batsman has two children, a daughter and son with wife Sarah Raheem.

Kane Williamson’s Cricket Career

He made his international debut at the age of 17 when he led the New Zealand Under-19 side in the World Cup in Malaysia in 2008. New Zealand advanced to the semifinals but lost to eventual winners India. 

On August 10, 2010, Williamson played in his first One-Day International match against India. He became the youngest centurion in New Zealand cricket history on October 14, 2010, when he hit his first ODI century against Bangladesh in Dhaka. Williamson was chosen for the New Zealand Test squad for the ensuing trip of India as a result of his performance on the Bangladesh tour, in which New Zealand lost 4-0.

On November 4, 2010, Williamson also made his Test cricket debut against India in Ahmedabad. He became the eighth New Zealand player to hit a century on Test debut with a score of 131 runs off 299 balls in his first innings.

In 2015, Williamson started playing in the Indian Premier League representing Sunrisers Hyderabad. They won the championship in 2016 and he continued to play for the team consecutively in 2017 and 2018. 

After Brendon McCullum retired in March 2016, Williamson took over as New Zealand’s captain in all forms of cricket, starting with the World T20I cup in India.

In June 2021, he led New Zealand to win in the first ICC World Test Championship defeating India in the championship match by an eight-wicket margin. Williamson was chosen to lead the New Zealand team at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in August 2021.  After defeating England in the T20 World Cup semifinal, New Zealand, led by him as captain, advanced to their third straight ICC event final across all forms.
