Mohan Kundariya, a BJP Lok Sabha member from Rajkot, revealed today that 12 of his family were killed in the Morbi suspension bridge collapse. They had gone to the picnic site on Sunday when the tragedy occurred, according to the BJP MP. Officials said that at least 141 people died when the 143-year-old suspension bridge on the Machchhu River collapsed last evening.

Who is Mohan Kundariya?

Mohanbhai Kalyanjibhai Kundariya is a former Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmer Welfare in the Indian government. He was born on September 6, 1951, to Kalyanji and Nakuben in Nichimandal, Rajkot, Gujarat.

He is married to Amrutben Kundariya and they have 3 daughters.

He was also elected to the Gujarat Legislative Assembly from the Rajkot district’s Tankara assembly constituency.

Kundariya won his fourth consecutive assembly election in 2007. He served as a member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly’s Panchayat Rajya Samiti, Public Accounts Committee, Estimates Committee, and Committee of Industries until 2011. He was later appointed Minister for Rural Development (Independent Charge) by the Gujarat government.

He was elected as MLA in 2012. He defeated Congress Party candidate Vadaviya Maganbhai Dhanjibhai. In 2014, he resigned from the assembly.

He beat Congress Party candidate Kunvarjibhai Mohanbhai Bavaliya. He later served as a member of the Standing Committee on Chemicals and Fertilizers from September 1, 2014 until November 9, 2014. From November 9, 2014 to August 27, 2015, he was also the Union Minister of State for Agriculture.

From September 1 to October 18, 2016, he was a member of the Standing Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment. On October 19, 2016, he was appointed to the Standing Committee on Water Resources. 

He served as Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare from August 27, 2015 to July 5, 2016.
