Who will be attending the swearing-in ceremony of CJI UU Lalit

Justice Uday Umesh Lalit is set to replace NV Ramana as the 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI) following his swearing-in ceremony on Saturday, August 27. The 64-year-old judge was appointed as the new CJI on August 10, 2022, by President Draupadi Murmu, and is known widely for his verdicts on important issues such as triple talaq, Travancore royal family’s right to administer the Padmanabhaswamy Temple and the Vijay Mallya contempt case.

The new CJI, UU Lalit is also the sixth senior counsel ever to be directly elevated to the Supreme Court of India. As he swears in as the 49th CJI of India, let’s take a look at who will be attending the ceremony on Saturday, August 27, 2022.

The Lalit family, who comes from Maharashtra, has a rich legacy of practising law for more than a century. The new CJI’s grandfather, Ranganath Lalit, used to be a lawyer in Solapur during the British Raj, much before the country got its independence. When Justice UU Lalit takes his oath as the new CJI on Saturday, at least three generations of his family will be present at the ceremony.

Umesh Ranganath Lalit, who was a high court judge during his long and prosperous career, is now 90 years old. He was also an advocate in Maharashtra before he was elevated to the role of a judge. He will also be present at the swearing-in ceremony of India’s 49th Chief Justice, UU Lalit.

Amita Lalit, who is the wife of the new Chief Justice, is a teacher at a school in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. She will be present during the swearing-in ceremony of her husband, Chief Justice UU Lalit on Saturday, along with their children, Harshad and Sreeyash.

Both Harshad Uday Lalit and Sreeyash Uday Lalit have pursued engineering degrees, however, Shreeyash later made his career in law. His wife, Raveena also works as a lawyer. Meanwhile, Harshad is a researcher and currently lives in the United States with his wife Radhika.

Apart from his family, the swearing-in ceremony of CJI UU Lalit will also be attended by the President of India, Draupadi Murmu, who appointed him in the designation. The ceremony will also be attended by several other dignitaries, whose names are yet to be disclosed by the authorities.
