Why IPL 2021 has been suspended

  • BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla said that IPL 2021 will be suspended 
  • Players and support staff across different teams tested positive for COVID in the past two days
  • The future of the tournament hangs in balance as more players are being tested for the virus

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice president Rajeev Shukla on Tuesday confirmed that Indian Premier League’s ongoing edition (IPL 2021) will be suspended indefinitely, with immediate effect, reports ANI. 

The ongoing IPL was suspended after players and support staff from various teams, including Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings, SunRisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.

The tournament, being held in the middle of the pandemic,  came under a shadow after KKR players Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier tested positive and the match between KKR and RCB got postponed for a later date. Further, two non-playing members of CSK also tested positive, after which organisers decided to reschedule the match between RR and CSK as well.

But, the cricket league was suspended indefinitely after SunRisers Hyderabad opener Wriddhiman Saha reportedly tested positive ahead of the MI vs SRH game on Tuesday. 

Though, the league has been suspended, the future of the tournament will only be know in a few days looking at the number of cases that might emerge after a few have tested positive.
