Web series ‘Grahan’ was caught in the soup after Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president demanded a ban on the show, which is based on the incidents of 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The series is slated to release on Disney+Hotstar on Thursday, June 24.

Bibi Jagir Kaur, president of SGPC that is considered the top body in the Sikh community, demanded an immediate ban on the web series from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. She has also condemned the construction of the Golden Temple replica model in a park near Punjabi Bagh in Delhi.

#BanGrahanWebseries started trending on Twitter on Wednesday, a day ahead of its release, as several members of the Sikh community asked for a ban.

“A Sikh character has been portrayed in an objectionable manner in web series ‘Grahan’ based on the 1984 Sikh genocide that took place across the country during then Congress government. In the web series, the charge of Sikh genocide is being levelled against a Sikh character which is highly condemnable and fabricated,” Kaur said on Monday, Hindustan Times quoted.

“Through this web series, work is being done to sprinkle salt on the wounds of Sikhs and hurt their sentiments. Such films also affect communal harmony in society,” she added.

A legal notice, which is supported by the SGPC, has been to the producer of the series, Ajay G Rai, and head and president of Disney+Hotstar, Sunil Ryan, by 1984 riots witness Bibi Nirpreet Kaur, Bibi Jagir Kaur said.

The show features Pawan Malhotra, Zoya Hussain, Wamiqa Gabbi and Anshuman Pushkar in the lead roles.
