I’ll always be grateful: Ashleigh Barty announces retirement from Tennis

Ashleigh Barty said that she will be retiring from Tennis in a social media message. The world number 1 Tennis player said that the day is “difficult and filled with emotion.”

Barty said in an emotional video posted Wednesday on social media: “I am so happy and I’m so ready. I just know at the moment in my heart for me as a person this is right.”

“I am so thankful for everything this sport has given me and leave feeling proud and fulfilled. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way, I’ll always be grateful for the lifelong memories that we created together”, the famed Australian Tennis player wrote in the social media post.

Barty, 25, recently became the first home player to win the Australian Open men’s or women’s singles title in 44 years. She also grabbed her first Grand Slam trophy in 2019 after winning the French Open.

Earlier this month, Barty said that she will not be taking part in  Indian Wells and the Miami Open as she was still recovering after winning the Australian Open.

“Unfortunately, my body has not recovered the way I would hoped after the Australian Open and I have not been able to adequately prepare for Indian Wells and Miami,” Barty said. “I do not believe I am at the level necessary to win these events and as a result I have decided to withdraw from both tournaments.

Barty, who left tennis in 2014 to pursue a professional cricket career but returned to the sport two years later, won her three major singles titles on three different surfaces.
