As America raged after the custodial death of a black man in Minneapolis on May 25, an Indian-origin man became an internet hero overnight.

Rahul Dubey, a businessman who has been in the US for the past 17 years, threw open his doors to help over 70 protesters in Washington DC and provided them food and shelter. The group was protesting over the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, in Minneapolis and was marching back after protesting near the White House when police action began.

A protester Meka told CNN that they were protesting peacefully when police action began. “The police started pushing us trampling people, and then that’s when everybody started panicking,” the 22-year-old college student said.

The Washington Police imposed curfew and protesters who feared arrest for being on the streets were helped by Dubey, who took them in before the police could arrest them.

Talking to local news channels, Dubey said, “I know most people would’ve flung open that door. I feel we as a nation are lost. I decided to help because no one is doing anything about it, except for these people.

“I hope that my 13-year-old son grows up to be just as amazing as they are,” the 44-year-old told ABC news channel.

Videos highlighting Dubey’s solidarity with the protesters started doing rounds on social media soon after.

The protesters who took shelter at Dubey’s house shared tweets about his generosity and how he kept everyone safe.

Protests and violent clashes have swept the US after a video showing an ex-police officer kneeling on Floyd, leading to his death, was circulated on social media. Celebrities, including Beyonce, Rihana, Taylor Swift and many others have lent their voice to these protests. Former president Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama have also released statements seeking justice for Floyd. Tech giants Google, Twitter, Snapchat and other platforms like Netflix have also supported the cause.
