A 40-year old man was arrested on Sunday, December 12, 2021 by Mysuru Police for a derogatory social media post on the late defense chief, General Bipin Rawat. The arrest took place just two days after Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai had directed the state police authorities to take strict action against individuals posting “offensive” social media content on the late defense chief.

The police official announced the arrest stating the man to be a technician in a city-based hospital in Mysuru.

General Bipin Rawat was the country’s first and sitting Chief of Defense Services. He was amongst the 13 people who died on the Indian Air Force helicopter plane crash in the Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiri district. The incident took place on Wednesday, also leading to the demise of Madhulika Rawat, wife of the former army chief.

“Offensive Tweets and Social Media posts about the tragic chopper crash in which we lost our #CDSGeneralBipinRawat will not be tolerated. I strongly condemn all such messages and have instructed our Police Officials to take strict disciplinary legal action against the offenders. They should be booked immediately as this is absolutely unpardonable,” chief minister Bommai tweeted on Friday.

Various other state governments, including the chief’s native state Uttarakhand, have also directed their police authorities and departments to take action against individuals making “derogatory posts” against CDS Bipin Rawat. In the wake of the death of the Chief of Defense, arrests have been made in Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu over tweets in relation to the helicopter crash.
