Lawmakers pay respect on Twitter to officer killed in US Capitol attack

After a second deadly attack in Washington DC this year, where one US Capitol police officer was killed after getting rammed by a car outside the Capitol building, US lawmakers and netizens started pouring in support for the law enforcement officials present at the scene while some criticised the violent act. 

Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell was one of the first lawmakers to demonstrate support for the US Capitol Police. However, there was no mention of the fallen officer as the Republican leader tweeted before the announcement was made. McConnell wrote that he was “praying for the United States Capitol Police officers who were attacked at the Capitol”.

On the other hand, Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer also took to Twitter to express his share of grief about the incident, however, after the acting Chief of the US Capitol Police concluded the press briefing. Schumer wrote a heartfelt message for the officers of the Capitol Police force and added, “We’re in their debt.”

Alejandro Mayorkas, who is serving as the Secretary of Homeland Security in the administration of US President Joe Biden, went a step further while sympathising with the law enforcement officials and offered support of the Department of Homeland Security to the US Capitol Police and the Washington DC mayor.

Messages from other government officials, including US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, and lawmakers are still awaited.
