Tokyo Olympics: Tale of Australian athletes and their drunken adventures
- The athletes exhibited "unacceptable behaviour", authorities said
- Teams "sincerely apologised to the Australian Olympic authorities"
- Some atheletes left a hole in the wall in a residential complex
Australian athletes at the Tokyo Olympics seemed to have a drunken adventure after competing in their respective sports, according to media reports. The Australian representatives exhibited “unacceptable behaviour” and reportedly consumed a significant amount of alcohol on their way back home.
Matt Carroll, Olympic Committee Chief of Australia said “while there has been no formal complaint from the airline, unacceptable behaviour was brought to our attention and I directly raised the issue with our member sports CEOs”, according to reports from VICE.
Carroll added that the athletes, who were involved in the rowdy flight, were participating in nine different sports. Football Australia and Rugby Australia had “sincerely apologised to the Australian Olympic Team”.
The Olympic village, where the competing athletes reside for the duration of the competition, also reportedly had rooms in “a messy and unacceptable state” left behind by the Australian athletes. VICE reported that allegations about broken beds and vomit was also recorded.
Ian Chesterman, Australian Olympic Team’s head, confirmed that the athletes left a hole in the wall in one of the residential complexes.
Even though the athletes involved in the messy state of affairs of the Olympic village were not identified by the relevant authorities, reports suggest that representatives from rugby, rowing and football teams were involved.
According to local media reports, the athletes on their way back from Tokyo were disturbing other passengers on the aircraft, keeping them up and not were not wearing face masks.
However, the Australian contingent has given an impressive performance on the field at Tokyo Olympics and has so far secured 41 medals for themselves. Australia, which is seeded at the sixt position in the competition at the end of week 2, has 17 gold medals, five silver and 19 bronze, according to reports from Associated Press.
