- The ninth round of talks between protesting farmer unions and three central ministers began on Friday afternoon
The ninth sitting of talks between agitating farmer unions and three central ministers to break months long deadlock on the three new agri laws remained inconclusive. Farmers’ Leaders and the government decided to meet again on January 19 to hold the next round of talks. Meanwhile, Anna Hazare confirmed that he would launch his hunger strike demanding the repeal of the new farm laws by the end of January if their demands are not met. Shiv Sena said on Thursday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would ‘grow bigger’ in stature in case of scraping the farm laws, which have prompted the protests since November. The Supreme Court, previously on Tuesday, stayed the implementation of the three controversial farm laws in the face of a slew of petitions challenging the legal validity of the laws, with the apex court further forming a four-member committee to carry out discussion between the farmers and the government. The committee is likely to hold its first meeting on January 19.
