SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, in a live stream on April
23, noted that the dangers of going to Mars included death. In a contrast to any
sort of a fantastical picture, the billionaire talked about the very real
perils of undertaking a journey to the red planet.

Musk said this while he was in conversation with
Peter Diamandis, founder and chairman of XPrize Foundation, about the organisation’s
initiative to announce a $100 million prize for innovators who are able to
develop gigaton-scale instruments of carbon removal.

12 minutes into the video, as the interaction veered towards
space-flight, Musk is seen describing the difficulty surrounding idea of
travelling to a different planet.

Maintaining a quirky outlook towards those who think the
mission is an “escape hatch for rich people”, Musk briefly outlined the journey
to be something much more than one-dimensional.

“Going to Mars reads like that ad for Shackleton going
to the Antarctic. You know, it’s dangerous, it’s uncomfortable, it’s a long
journey, you might not, you know, come back alive. But it’s a glorious
adventure, and it’ll be an amazing experience”, he said.
