Cancelled India-England fifth Test to be played in July 2022: ECB

The fifth and final Test between India and England, which was called off after a COVID-19 outbreak in the visitors’ camp, has been rescheduled will be played from July 1, 2022, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed on Friday. 

In a statement, ECB said, “With India leading the series 2-1, the concluding fifth match will now take place from July 1, 2022, at Edgbaston, following an agreement between the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).”

The match was originally scheduled to be held at Old Trafford, Manchester from September 10. It will now be played at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

“Ticket holders do not have to take any action as all tickets will remain valid for the equivalent rearranged matchday at their host venue,” The ECB said.

The rescheduling has also led to a change in venue for the second Test between England and South Africa, starting August 25, 2022. It was slated to be held at Edgaston, but will now be played at Old Trafford. 

Meanwhile, the T20 international and ODI series between India and England will start six days later than originally planned. The three-match T20I series will be played at the Ageas Bowl, Southampton on July 7, with the second and third games – to be hosted at Edgbaston and Trent Bridge – rescheduled for July 9 and 10.

The first two of three-match ODI series will be played in London, with the Kia Oval and Lord’s hosting the first and second encounters on July 12 and 14 respectively. The final ODI will be played at Old Trafford on July 17.      

The series had started the 2021-23 cycle of the World Test Championship in August. The opening Test at Trent Bridge was drawn with India winning the second encounter at Lord’s. England bounced back for a thumping win in Leeds, before India edged ahead in the series at the Kennington Oval, London. 

The fifth match at Old Trafford was indefinitely postponed after India head coach Ravi Shashtri tested positive for COVID-19, leading to three other staff members to isolate.
