Commonwealth Games 2022, Day 4: Judokas shine, Harjinder Kaur clinches bronze

India added three medals on Day 4 of the Commonwealth Games – judokas Shushila Devi Likmabam and Vijay Kumar Yadav coming back with silver and bronze respectively and Harjinder Kaur clinched a bronze in 71kg women’s weightlifting.

Shushila Devi Likmabam went down in the women’s 48kg final against South Africa’s Michaela Whitebooi. The latter delivered a Waza-ari in 4.25 minutes. In men’s 60kg repechage, Vijay Kumar Yadav produced a superb performance to advance to the bronze medal match with a win by ‘Waza Ari’ over Dylon Munro of Scotland.

Jasleen Singh Saini will fight for a bronze medal after losing the men’s 66kg semifinal to Scotland’s Finlay Allan.

Weightlifter Harjinder Kaur won a bronze medal in the Women’s 71 Kg weight category. She lifted total of 212kg (93kg in Snatch + 119kg in C&J). India now has seven medals in weightlifting.

Indian shuttlers reached the final of the mixed team events after beating Singapore 3-0. The will face Malaysia for the title. The table tennis team also reached  the gold level clash in the men’s category. 

The Indian hockey team started off strong against England. However, some late goals saw the match tie at 4-4.

Boxer Amit Panghal began his campaign at the Commonwealth Games with a facile win as he stormed into the men’s flyweight (51kg) quarterfinals. Featherweight boxer Mohammad Hussamudin and light heavyweight boxer Ashish Kumar (80kg) also made advances. 

Star squash player Saurav Ghosal progressed to the men’s singles semifinals, but it was curtains for Joshna Chinappa as she suffered a loss to Canada’s Hollie Naughton in the women’s singles quarterfinals. 

India lawn bowls team assured itself a historic first ever Commonwealth Games medal after defeating New Zealand 16-13 in the semi-final of the women’s fours event.

This will be India’s maiden final appearance in the women’s fours format of the competition.

The women’s fours team comprising Lovely Choubey (lead), Pinki (second), Nayanmoni Saikia (third) and Rupa Rani Tirkey (skip) will face South Africa in the gold medal clash on Tuesday.
