In a daring move, the Lions executed a fake punt on fourth-and-two from their own 17-yard line. Instead of facing another three-and-out possession, Jalen Reeves-Maybin, serving as the upback, received the direct snap and advanced for a gain of 3 yards. This marked the first time a team had executed a fake punt from inside their own 20 since the Ravens did so.

During the ensuing 14-play drive, rookie Jahmyr Gibbs contributed with three rushes for a total of 18 yards, while Jared Goff displayed accuracy by completing 5 of 6 passes for 53 yards and a touchdown.

As the first quarter came to a close, the Lions held a 7-0 lead.
