Germany’s Antonio Rudiger celebrated animatedly after his header sent the ball past Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon, into the bottom right. However, the goal was ruled offside after a VAR check.

Watch Rudiger’s celebration:

Facing Spain in a critical game of the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Sunday, Germany need a win to bolster their chances of qualification to the round of 16. At the 39th minute, Germany were gifted a corner. Making good use of the pass, Antonio Rudiger shoved the ball into the goal. Immediately after the goal, Rudiger burst into animated celebrations while the German team followed him. However, the goal was soon ruled out as an offside by VARS (voice activated response system) and netizens trolled Rudiger for his premature celebrations.

The score was locked at 0-0 at half-time. However, a little into the second half, substitute Alvaro Morata scored a goal, giving Spain a crucial lead and a big chance to virtually seal qualification with a game to spare. However, with defeat and a possibly shock World Cup exit starring in the face, Germany stepped up the pressure with an attempt by Jamal Musiala that did not make it to the goal.

Eventually, it was substitute Nicklas Fullkrug who scored the equaliser in the 84th minute. With 6 minutes left and an additional 6 mins of injury time that followed, both Spain and Germany came close but failed to make inroads and had to eventually settle for a 1-1 draw.

The draw is a good result for Germany as they can qualify to the round of 16 with a win against Costa Rica, provided Spain beats Japan. For Spain, qualification is not yet certain with three points, despite having scored a massive 7-0 victory over Costa Rica on Wednesday.
