Gulf of Mexico: Social media set ablaze with memes on ‘eye of fire’

A massive ring of flames exploded on the ocean’s surface in the Gulf of Mexico on Friday, setting social media ablaze with drone images of the “eye of fire.”

On July 2, videos of the fire, which appeared to boil the ocean’s surface with bright orange flames, went viral before it was put out about 150 yards from a drilling platform on Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula, according to Mexico’s state-owned Pemex petrol company.

According to the firm, the fire started after a gas leak from an underwater pipeline caused a flame. The company said that “no injuries or evacuations are reported.”

One Twitter user wrote, “The Gulf of Mexico is on fire, it’s 112 degrees in Portland, roads and rails are crumbling from the sun, wildfire and hurricane season are here in record time and people are concerned about the cost of going green. COMPARED TO WHAT?”

“I’m not saying the tornado on the National Mall and the burning cauldron of fire in the Gulf of Mexico are the universe’s wrathful response to the Supreme Court’s gutting voting rights. I’m just saying I wish certain justices would swim in the Gulf of Mexico to prove otherwise,” another commented.

A user interestingly said, “If this was 80s, that video of the demon firehole in gulf of Mexico would have been a global event, with articles written about how it brought some kind of environmental consciousness. But it’s 2021 & we are far past the tipping point. We can cry but we live in Exxon’s world now.”
