Manchester United faced Atletico Madrid in Oslo for pre-season friendlies, and a late goal from Joao Felix gave former Ajax coach Erik ten Hag his first loss since he began managing the Premier League side.

However, Google, in its live updates of the match, made a gaffe, reflecting United had one by one goal when in reality the 86th-minute score from Felix saw Diego Simeone’s Atletico walk away as victors.

One Twitter user commented on Google’s understanding of football, explaining that United midfielder Fred had picked up a red at the end of the game, but it’s goals that win matches.

Another Twitter user – who presumably didn’t see the game – lamented getting hyped about the score on Google.

Even TrollFootball, a page which is known for its jokes about the game, chipped in, calling Google a United fan. One Twitter user expressed their confusion, thinking that Felix had scored an own goal, which would explain the scoreline on the search engine.

Some joked about Google’s confidence in United winning, which they said led to the wrong score representation. Another said it was mind games from ten Hag, the Dutch manager who’s expected to take United into a new era, following a slump period after Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure. Yet another individual suggested that United bribed Google to make Felix’s goal count for the English side.

On a more serious note, some fans have lamented the lack of attacking options with United, pointing out that Mason Greenwood’s goals were of a similar nature. The up-and-coming forward got himself into trouble over domestic violence charges and is not a part of the squad.

The Red Devils still have Cristiano Ronaldo as an option, but the Portuguese star has also expressed a keen interest in leaving and was not part of the game today.
