Due to a knee injury sustained in the first quarter, the Chiefs were missing their standout tight end Travis Kelce. Although JuJu Smith-Schuster, the Chiefs’ top wide receiver, was out with a shoulder injury, Patrick Mahomes did his best to direct the offense despite this setback.
Jared Goff, the quarterback for the Detroit Lions, struggled as well, as the Chiefs defense sacked him four times. The Lions were able to take the lead for good in the fourth quarter thanks to a 33-yard touchdown pass from him to Josh Reynolds. He was also able to make some other significant plays.
In addition to forcing two errors and limiting the Chiefs to just 20 points, the Lions’ defense played outstandingly.
For the Lions, who are hoping to improve upon their 3-13 record from the previous season, the victory was a significant statement. The Chiefs, who are anticipated to again compete for the Super Bowl, had a dismal start as well.
Early in the game, Lions head coach Dan Campbell took a risky risk by calling a fake punt on fourth-and-2 from his own 20-yard line. The Lions were able to get the first down and continue the drive, proving that the bet paid off.
Campbell’s willingness to take chances was evident in the fake punt, which also helped establish the mood for the game. The Lions were able to capitalize on the Chiefs’ errors because they played with a lot of vigor and aggression.
