Paris Saint-Germain has declared that Kylian Mbappe has renewed his contract for three more years just before kick-off before Saturday’s encounter against FC Metz.

With his previous contract set to expire this summer, the French champions were in risk of losing the 23-year-old.

Real Madrid had been linked with him, but an increased contract offer from PSG boosted the club’s chances of keeping him.

PSG did, however, persuade the striker to commit to his future, with a new contract announced on Saturday night.

“I wanted to announce that I have chosen to extend my contract at Paris Saint-Germain, and of course I am very happy about it,” Mbappe stated when the agreement was announced.

“I am convinced that here I can continue to grow within a club which gives itself all the means to perform at the highest level. I am also very happy to be able to continue to evolve in France, the country where I was born, grew up and flourished,” the World Cup winner said.

“I would like to thank the President, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, for his confidence, his understanding and his patience. I also have a thought for all the supporters of Paris Saint-Germain, in France and around the world, for their countless expressions of affection, especially in recent months. It is together, united and ambitious, that we will take up the most magical bets,” the striker added.

Al-Khelaifi said, “The extension of Kylian’s contract marks an exceptional moment in the history of our Club and is great news for all our fans around the world. Since Kylian joined our family, despite his young age, he has accomplished wonders at all levels. By extending with Paris Saint-Germain, he becomes the cornerstone of the club’s project for the years to come, on and off the pitch.”

“I am very proud and very happy – for Kylian, for our supporters and for the whole Paris Saint-Germain family on all continents – to continue our fantastic shared adventure. For our fans and our club, we are going to open the most beautiful pages of our history,” Al-Khelaifi concluded.

The agreement’s financial terms have yet to be published.

PSG was willing to offer him a 150 million euro signing-on fee to keep him for another two seasons, according to Spanish football analyst Guillem Balague, who wrote so last month.

Mbappe agreed to a financial package with Real Madrid months ago but has decided not to join Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

He joined PSG in August 2017 on a season-long loan from Monaco, and he has since helped them win four Ligue 1 titles in five seasons.

The Qatari-owned club was desperate to keep him and was willing to offer him a net annual salary of £21 million.

Mbappe scored in each leg of PSG’s Champions League last-16 match against Real Madrid this season, but it was not enough to keep PSG from being eliminated 3-2 on aggregate.
