The Laver Cup reaches the United Kingdom for the first time in the tournament’s history in 2022.

The fifth edition of the team event will be held at London’s O2 Arena, which will have an additional dimension of interest this year due to Roger Federer playing his final professional match before retiring. On Friday night, there was a sentimental doubles match with Rafael Nadal.

Federer’s management team created the popular contest, which was intended to be tennis’ response to the Ryder Cup in golf.

Format and scoring system

The Laver Cup is held over three days (Friday through Sunday), with singles and doubles matches played on each day. Friday’s matches are worth one point, Saturday’s are worth two, and Sunday’s are worth three.

Each player competes in at least one singles match on Friday and Saturday, but no player may compete in singles more than twice in three days.

Each team must have at least four players play doubles, but no doubles pairing can be used more than one time.

The Laver Cup is won by the team that scores 13 points first. If there is a tie after all 12 matches, a final doubles match called a Decider is played.

Prize money

The Laver Cup places six of Europe’s best players against six of the rest of the world’s best players, creating two teams – Team Europe and Team World.

Each participant of the winning team receives a prize of £220,000.

That means the six lucky winners will split a total prize pot of £1.3 million.

Past winners

Since the competition’s inception in 2017, Team Europe has won all four previous editions.

The Laver Cup was created by Roger Federer’s management company, Brazilian businessman and former Davis Cup player Jorge Paulo Lemann, and Tennis Australia.

Federer was motivated to create a tennis tournament akin to golf’s Ryder Cup.

The Laver Cup is held every year, with the location alternating between cities in Europe and around the world.

The Laver Cup does not add up towards players’ ATP Tour ranking points, but it did become an officially approved ATP Tour event in 2019.
