Schumacher’s wife tears up as F1 star honoured with State Prize of North Rhine-Westphalia

Michael Schumacher, seven-time world champion, was honoured with the State Prize of North Rhine-Westphalia on Wednesday. The F1 legend has been in medically induced coma since 2013 and his family received the award on his behalf. 

State Prize of North Rhine-Westphalia is presented to German citizens who have made extraordinary contributions to the people and the state.

Schumacher dominated F1 for more than 17 years – in two stints. He was born in North Rhine-Westphalia. The 53-year-old recorded 91 wins and 155 podium finishes. A year after retiring from the sport, the legendary racer suffered life-changing imjuries in a skiing accident in 2013. 

His son Mick, who races for HAAS currently, did not attend the ceremony due to illness. Schumacher’s wife Corinna and daughter Gina-Maria were there on his behalf.

As Schumacher was given a standing ovation by people in attendance, Corinna burst into tears. 

Former FIA President Jean Todt also joined the Schumacher family on stage. 

“An emotional ceremony in Cologne to honour Michael Schumacher’s outstanding career and charitable streak with Corinna, Gina, Mick Schumacher and Henrik Wust. I met Michael 30 years ago, with Ferrari, living his passion and bringing joy to millions of us!” he tweeted. 

Talking about  Michael Schumacher’s wife crying and the standing ovation for the legend, Todt told Bild, “That’s just natural. No one planned it to be so emotional that tears were shed by Corinna, but sometimes it’s good to not always control yourself.”

He further revealed the fact that he sees Michael, giving us little insight into his health: “I don’t miss Michael, I see him. Yes, it’s true, I watch races with Michael.

“But sure, I guess what I miss is what we used to do together.”

Micl Schumacher is currently participating in the French Grand Priz.
